Evergreen Habitat for Humanity launches new Critical Home Repair program

The new program builds on their current minor exterior home repair program, A Brush With Kindness, and allows Habitat to complete more extensive, interior work

VANCOUVER — Evergreen Habitat for Humanity launched a new program this summer to serve more families in Clark County through home repair. The new Critical Home Repair program builds on their current minor exterior home repair program, A Brush With Kindness, and allows Habitat to complete more extensive, interior work. Examples of the new program include retrofitting a bathroom, repairing a leaking roof, or making a home more ADA accessible.

“Here at Evergreen Habitat we believe that having a home means more than simply having a roof over your head and a place to sleep at night. Home is a place that keeps you healthy, safe and secure” says Josh Townsley, executive director. “Many in our community, while they may technically have a roof over their head, are living in substandard conditions. Countless homes throughout Vancouver and Clark County are showing signs of their age, and homeowners are unable to keep up with necessary repairs due to family circumstance or financial and physical obstacles. We’re excited to launch this new program and offer a hand up to folks in need in our community.”

Critical Home Repair is a program which will tackle major issues that affect the health, safety and structural integrity of a home such as leaking roofs, internal systems and accessibility standards. Work completed through Critical Home Repair will not only preserve our local housing stock leading to a healthier market, but will provide safer and healthier environments for families to thrive, aid in local beautification efforts, and maintain the equity which families have worked so hard to attain.

This project launch was made possible through a grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. This local trust is invested in a thriving Clark County across all sectors and selected Evergreen Habitat for Humanity for partnership. We are excited to partner with M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust this year as they surpass $1 billion in cumulative grants made since opening their doors in 1975. Over the course of 3 years, the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust will grant over $150,000 towards the launch of Critical Home Repair through staffing and equipment support. The rest of the funding to complete each project will come from donors and individuals. It’s truly amazing to see the difference we can make for our friends and neighbors when we come together to respond to a growing need. Here at Habitat we are humbled by the local commitment to housing solutions.

Evergreen Habitat is now accepting applications for the Critical Home Repair program. To learn more or to apply, contact Family Services Manager Melissa Edwards, at (360) 737-1759 or melissa@ehfh.org.

Since 1991, Evergreen Habitat for Humanity has worked to improve living conditions for low-income Clark County residents. People in our community, and all over the world, partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability, and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.
