Funds engineering/design work for Brezee Creek culvert replacement/East 4th Street widening
LA CENTER — The city of La Center received a $1.5 million appropriation during the recently-concluded session of the Washington State Legislature. The funding comes through the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Local and Community Projects fund in the 2019-2021 adopted biennial budget.
The funds will be used to conduct engineering, design, permitting, and other pre-construction work to replace a fish-blocking culvert under East 4th Street and widen East 4th Street to urban complete street standards from East Cedar Avenue to Northeast Highland Avenue. Replacement of the culvert will aid in salmon recovery in Brezee Creek, an East Fork Lewis River tributary.
Roadway widening will improve safety and mobility for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians in the vicinity of several school facilities. East 4th Street also serves as a regional connection between the Interstate 5 La Center Junction and areas of Northeast Clark County outside of the City of La Center, carrying a substantial number of regional trips each day.
Upon learning of the appropriation, Mayor Greg Thornton thanked legislators of the 18th Legislative District noting: “We are grateful for the hard work and excellent collaboration of Senator Ann Rivers (R – La Center) and Representatives Brandon Vick (R – Vancouver) and Larry Hoff (R – Vancouver). Their efforts and their ability to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle delivered for their constituents in La Center and North Clark County.”
The project is anticipated to go to the construction phase in 2021.
