Survive, then thrive.

That is the football story for the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.

The two teams that will earn the playoff spots out of this league will automatically be legitimate contenders to win a state championship. Recent history tells us so.

A year ago, Camas won the league title, then won five more playoff games for the program’s first state championship.

A year ago, Skyview finished second in the league, then reached the state semifinals.

Also, a year ago, Battle Ground went 7-2, was ranked in the state’s top 10, yet stayed home in November.

Yes, one ridiculous tough league, with even tougher standards. Only two playoff spots are available.

ClarkCountyToday.com reporter Paul Valencia previews all 18 of Clark County’s high school football teams this week with the assistance of photographer/videographer Mike Schultz. On Tuesday, we begin the series with a look at the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League teams. Checkback in coming days for the previews of Class 3A and 2A GSHL and Class 1A Trico League teams as we prepare you for the 2017 high school football season.

The top storylines going into this season:

  • Camas has won 50 consecutive regular-season games and has not lost a league game this decade.
  • Skyview is hoping this is the year to knock off the Papermakers.
  • Union, the buzz of the offseason, hopes to crash the playoff party.

ClarkCountyToday.com will have stories on all 18 Clark County football teams, along with schedules and team outlooks. Today we start, in alphabetical order, with the teams of the 4A GSHL:

Battle Ground has a new coach and will try to maintain the momentum from back-to-back winning seasons.

Camas has plenty of experience at replacing experience, and new players will make a name for themselves like Isaiah Abdul did last season.

Heritage, after coming one win short last year, is looking for its first winning regular season since 2008.

Skyview has the most all-league performers returning and Cole Grossman, one of the top recruits in the region.

Union welcomes back Jojo Siofele, its star running back who missed most of last season with a knee injury.

Look for 3A GSHL, 2A GSHL, and Trico League teams in the coming days.
